The best I could do on Amistad - 2 lbs and on the first day we were there. Early optimism soon faded with the weather change.


It was nice to see that they had a personalized reserved parking or fishing place for me on the lake. Of course the bird droppings sent a mixed message.

Amistad Report

I'm a little behind on this post. We got back from Lake Amistad last Friday afternoon after a week of good companionship and so-so fishing. Here's the report

Water temp averaged 61-63 degrees; a lot of clear blue sky and wind.
All days except for Monday with the guide we fished up the Devil's River Arm of the lake.
On every day except Saturday, we did this to manage the wind. It worked - a little, but not a lot.
We caught fish every day - but not a lot nor very big fish (2 pounds was my best). Our best baits were a 5 inch shaky power worm (red shad) on a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce shaky jig head of some type. Next to this comes a stick-worm in red shad either on a jig head or Texas-rigged.

I have to admit that the clarity of the water - and then the wind played with my head. I've been on clear lakes, but at one point I looked at my depth finder and we were in 12-13 feet of water and I could see the bottom of the lake! I deliberately fished a Texas-rigged worm in 15-20 feet of water; I've never done that before.

I wish for three things: 1) a chance to go back tomorrow, 2) a better guide (another story), 3) a chance to reread the fishing report and try some jerk baits, 4) a bigger boat so that I am able to get out on the main lake where it appears the bigger (and more) fish roam. The last item is unlikely - but I'd take 1-3 in a hearbeat.

Warming Up

Back to Lake Coleman this morning - and the water is warming. Here comes spring!

The water temp was up to 53-54 degrees, clear water for Coleman, wind as the day wore on, and lots of sun (air temps into the upper 60's-70). I got on the water around 8:30 and by 10:30 I had put 10 fish in the boat (only 4-5 more after), most around a pound or pound and a half. A 4 inch worm (red shad) on a 1/8 shaky head jig was the bait of the day. Nothing else got a bite (7" Texas rigged worm, bleeding shad rattle trap). A ledge with brush (near the bridge) in 5-6 ft of water was the place. I caught a few elsewhere - but nothing like on this spot.
